What Smell Do Roaches Hate? Peppermint Oil and Repellents

What smell do roaches hate? Roaches avoid citrus, cinnamon, lavender, catnip and peppermint oils in lab tests, but no smell kills them or clears an infestation, and the effect fades as the oil evaporates. Use smells only at entry points, never near bait. Skip mothballs and ultrasonic plug-ins; seal gaps and put gel bait where roaches hide.

Cost: about $54 in supplies. Difficulty: moderate. Call a pro if sticky traps still catch roaches after a month of baiting, or roaches keep coming in from a neighboring apartment.

This guide grades each smell and store repellent against the studies, then covers what clears roaches and what it costs. We haven’t tested these repellents ourselves; this rests on published lab and field studies, UC IPM, NPIC, NC State and Rutgers guidance, Poison Control and Pet Poison Helpline, and list prices. The full plan is in our guide to getting rid of roaches.

How We Compared These Smells and Repellents

We rated each option on five things:

  • Evidence: lab test, field test or none, and on which roach.
  • Staying power: how long the effect lasts before the oil evaporates.
  • Effect on an infestation: whether it kills the roaches already inside or just moves them.
  • Safety: risks to children, cats and dogs.
  • Price: U.S. list prices checked October 1, 2026.

What Smells Do Roaches Hate? The Evidence, Graded

Most lists of what repels roaches trace back to lab studies of concentrated essential oils:

SmellWhat the evidence shows
Citrus (lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit)Strong lab repellency; one field test cut roach numbers for about a week
CinnamonRepelled 90% of German roaches in a lab test
LavenderAmong the strongest of 12 oils tested on German roaches
CatnipA catnip compound beat DEET against male German roaches in a lab
PeppermintKills a roach on direct contact; a weaker repellent than cinnamon
Bay leaves, cucumber, coffee grounds, vinegarWe found no home test
MothballsLittle or no effect as repellents
Ultrasonic plug-insCommercial devices failed to repel German roaches

Why a Roach Repellent Can’t Clear an Infestation

A repellent only moves roaches somewhere else. It can’t reach the ones living in your walls and cabinets, and it can backfire: NPIC warns that some pesticides repel roaches rather than kill them, so make sure you’re not chasing them into other rooms or apartments.

Lab results also overstate home results. Essential oils evaporate soon after you apply them (2025 lab study), and even a slow-release blend in another study kept German roaches away for only about 10 hours.

Does Peppermint Oil Repel Roaches?

Somewhat, in the lab, but it isn’t the strongest oil. Sprayed straight on a roach, undiluted peppermint oil knocked roaches down about as fast as any of 16 oils in the 2025 study; that kills the one you hit, not the dozens in cracks. As a repellent, cinnamon beat it in a lab test of six oils.

A ready-to-use 15-ounce spray with 4% peppermint oil lists at $10.39, and its listing says it lasts 2 weeks. “EPA exempt” on the bottle isn’t a performance claim: the EPA says it generally doesn’t review “minimum risk” products.

If you use it anyway, spray door thresholds and pipe gaps, not cabinets. Insecticide sprays can repel roaches and stop them eating bait (NC State), and a strong scent risks the same.

Best for: door thresholds and pipe gaps, if at all.
Main limitation: moves roaches rather than killing them, and it’s toxic to cats.

Do Roaches Hate Citrus, Cinnamon or Lavender?

Yes, in lab tests, and citrus has the only field result we found for a natural roach repellent. Grapefruit, lemon, lime and orange oils repelled 70 to 96.7% of German roaches in a lab study, and in a field trial in Thailand, a makrut lime oil spray cut roach numbers by up to 86% for about a week.

Cassia (a type of cinnamon) oil repelled 90% of German and 76% of American roaches in the six-oil test. Lavender was one of the three strongest of 12 oils in the slow-release study and killed roaches on direct contact. One compound in catnip oil repelled male German roaches more strongly than the same dose of DEET in a lab study.

Illustration: a spray bottle misting a cabinet floor beside dots of gel bait (left), and the same corner with only bait dots and a sticky trap (right).

Best for: entry points, reapplied at least weekly.
Main limitation: none was tested in a lived-in home over months.

Bay Leaves, Vinegar and Other Home Remedies: Untested

Bay leaves, cucumber slices, coffee grounds, dryer sheets and vinegar all show up on natural roach repellent lists. We found no home test of any of them, and none for Pine-Sol or bleach either. Wiping counters with a cleaner removes the crumbs and grease that feed roaches, which helps, but the smell won’t keep them out. Keep cleaners off gel bait.

Mothballs are the one remedy to rule out: they have little or no effect as repellents, and using them any way the label doesn’t describe could put you and others at risk, says NPIC. The same goes for mothballs against mice.

Best for: nothing beyond ordinary cleaning.
Main limitation: no evidence on roaches at all.

Do Ultrasonic Roach Repellers Work?

No. In a test of three commercial units, none repelled German roaches well enough to count as pest control. A 2023 lab study found some repellency, but from a signal generator in a glass chamber, not a plug-in you can buy. Our ultrasonic repeller review covers the same devices on mice and rats.

Best for: nothing.
Main limitation: store units failed the only test of them.

What Actually Keeps Roaches Away

Sealing gaps and baiting, not scent. First check which roach it is: a German cockroach is about ½ inch, light brown, with 2 dark stripes behind its head, and breeds indoors (UC IPM). A 1¼ to 2 inch reddish-brown or almost black roach is likely an American or oriental roach from outdoors, so one big roach in a clean home may be a stray: set traps before you bait.

Step 1: Seal how they get in. Fit door sweeps and weather stripping, and seal gaps around cabinets, backsplashes, pipes and wires with silicone caulk, screening or copper mesh. Check boxes, furniture and appliances you bring in. Renting? Tell your landlord in writing, with photos: roaches move between units.

Illustration: sealing the gap around a pipe under the kitchen sink with silicone caulk.

Step 2: Bait the roaches already inside. Put pea-sized dabs of gel bait in cabinet hinges, under the sink and behind the fridge; roaches eat it, crawl back and poison others that feed on their droppings. UC IPM says baits don’t attract roaches over long distances, so bait goes right where they hide. Choosing a gel is in our roach gel bait guide, and skip foggers: roach bombs don’t work on roaches in cracks.

Step 3: Track them with sticky traps. Set traps along walls and under the sink, and count catches every week or two. Rutgers recommends rechecking and retreating every 2 to 4 weeks until no roaches turn up for at least a month; expect 7 days or longer before you see fewer (UC IPM).

Smells That Attract Roaches

Knowing what draws roaches in is more useful than chasing what repels them. Crumbs, grease on the stove, sticky spills and dishes left overnight top the list, along with open trash, unrinsed cans and pet food left in the bowl. NPIC notes that limiting moisture, such as leaky pipes and wet sponges, can deter German cockroaches.

Droppings carry scents that draw more roaches to the same hiding spots, which is why cleaning up cockroach poop matters. The same fermenting-food smells make good trap bait: bread soaked in beer on a sticky trap pulls roaches out so you can count them (roach traps).

Are Natural Roach Repellents Safe for Kids and Pets?

“Natural” doesn’t make essential oils harmless. Poison Control says many can cause skin rashes and some are poisonous if swallowed or absorbed through the skin, so lock bottles away from children and pets. It also describes a toddler who had a seizure after eating camphor set out for roaches; call 1-800-222-1222 if someone swallows an oil or camphor.

Pet Poison Helpline lists peppermint, citrus (d-limonene), cinnamon, clove and eucalyptus oils among those known to poison cats: most of the roach repellent list. Signs include drooling, vomiting, tremors and wobbliness. Keep sprays and diffusers out of your cat’s rooms, and call your vet if you see symptoms.

Before You Spray: A Quick Checklist

  1. Identify the roach by size and color before buying anything.
  2. Set 2 or 3 sticky traps under the sink and near the door.
  3. Seal gaps around pipes and doors with caulk and a door sweep.
  4. Bait cracks with pea-sized gel dabs, away from any scent or cleaner.
  5. Lock essential oils away from children, and keep them out of cat rooms.
  6. Wipe up crumbs and standing water every night.
  7. Recheck traps every 2 to 4 weeks until a month passes with none.

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if sticky traps still catch roaches after a month of baiting, or if roaches keep coming from next door. Ask what they’ll use and where: bait in cracks, not spray along baseboards.

Common questions

Yes, through their antennae. In the catnip study, roaches with their antennae removed ignored doses that repelled intact ones. Odors also help you find them: here’s what roaches smell like.

The Bottom Line

Smells repel roaches for hours, or about a week at best, and none reaches the ones in your walls. Put the spray money toward gel bait, sticky traps and caulk, and keep any scent at the door, away from the bait.
